Abia First Lady pays over N3 million hospital bills of indigent patients, empowers petty traders to celebrate World Charity Day

The Wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti, on Thursday paid the hospital bills of six indigent patients totalling N3 million at the Federal Medical Centre(FMC), Umuahia. Mrs Otti performed the kind gesture in commemoration of the 2024 World Charity Day, an International event which celebrated annually around the world every September 5. Speaking after handling over the proof of payment to the management of FMC, she said the gesture was in line with the rebuilding agenda of the State Government aimed at improving the welfare of the people. She said that such visits would be regular, and encouraged well meaning individuals to support the less privileged individuals, especially as the economic crunch keeps biting harder.

The Abia Governor’s wife appreciated the dedication of the management and staff of FMC and urged them to sustain their efforts in offering high quality healthcare services. Also, the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs Blessing Felix, said that the beneficiaries of the support from the First Lady had since been discharged, but could not afford the bills until the intervention of the governor’s wife.

In their separate responses, some beneficiaries of the largesse, Michael Udoh , Odiwonma Finest , Caroline Akachukwu among others thanked the wife of the Governor for her kind gesture and prayed God to bless her. In a related development, Mrs Otti assisted no fewer than 50 traders at the Orie-Ugba Market in Umuahia with cash to improve their businesses. She said that plans were underway to ensure that the market would be rebuilt to provide them with a conducive environment for their businesses to thrive.
