FOURTEEN COUNTRIES STORM ABIA FOR INTERNATIONAL PARA-BADMINTON & ALL-AFRICA CHAMPIONSHIP

  • by

Abia State has rolled out the red carpet as it welcomes delegations from 14 countries for the International Para-Badminton Championship and the All-Africa Badminton Championship, taking place in Umuahia from September 30 to October 12, 2025. The twin tournaments mark a milestone for both Nigeria and the African badminton community.

More than 150 athletes and 60 officials are participating, with countries such as Brazil, India, Peru, Cameroon, Benin, Tunisia, Mauritius, Rwanda, Egypt, Zimbabwe, and others represented. The strong international turnout is seen as a testament to Abia’s readiness to host global sporting events.

The State Government confirmed that all preparations are complete, with world-class facilities set up, including competition-standard courts, nets, mats, and lighting. The Commissioner for Sports, through his Special Assistant, assured that adequate security, medical support, and logistics are in place to ensure a smooth championship.

Officials from the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA), and the Badminton World Federation (BWF) have endorsed Abia as a competent host, applauding Governor Alex Otti’s administration for investing in sports development and inclusivity. This event is particularly historic as Nigeria becomes only the third African country to stage an international Para-Badminton competition — a key step toward giving differently-abled athletes a stronger platform on the continent.

Beyond the competition, the championships are expected to deliver far-reaching benefits for the state. Local businesses and the hospitality sector are already seeing a boost from the influx of international visitors. The government also views the tournament as a chance to inspire young Nigerians, promote grassroots badminton, and spotlight Abia as an emerging hub for sports tourism in Africa.

The games will run through mid-October, with finals drawing global attention to Abia and its role in advancing both African sport and inclusion on the world stage.
