For several decades, the people of Umuogele, Umuakwu, Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North LGA lived in fear.
Their homeland had been ravaged by the disastrous effects of gulley erosion. Lives and property have been lost over the years. Many of them abandoned their homes.
Successive administrations from the old Imo State had no solution to their problems and they had resigned to fate. They simply waited for the worst. The magnitude of the problem was way beyond them.
Then came Ikpeazu!
After a careful and dispassionate analysis, Ikpeazu approached the World Bank and presented this case, alongside others.
The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Program (NEWMAP) is a World Bank Assisted Project established to help tackle the crisis of gulley erosion crisis in some selected parts of Nigeria.
State Governments are required to partner with the World Bank by paying Counterpart Funds for the selected projects as well as other forms of collaboration.
The Government of Abia State fully complied with all the requirements to activate this project as Ikpeazu ordered full compliance.
When this project was awarded, I visited the community to see things for myself. The devastation was unbelievable. I also reported it here. That was last year.
Today, the project has been completed. The remediation of the environment has been fully achieved and the people there are filled with gratitude to the administration of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.
No wonder they stayed till almost 9pm last night waiting for the Governor who come to Commission the project as part of the Governor’s Media Tour of ongoing and completed projects.
We arrived the community very late. We drove from another community, Umuezeukwu also in Isiala Ngwa North LGA where the same kind of erosion remediation project was also completed in collaboration with NEWMAP.
It was with joy that the people welcomed us last night. The Traditional Ruler of the Community, Eze Dr. Aliche, The Ehuma of Akwuanunu Autonomous Community led his people, including Commissioner Designate, Bob Chiedozie Ogu to receive Governor Ikpeazu last night.
Deputy Governor Ude Oko Chukwu, Member representing Isiala Ngwa North in the Abia Assembly, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, Chairman of Isiala Ngwa North, Chief Chidiebere Okoronkwo, Former Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly and Commissioner Designate, Rt. Hon Cosmos Ndukwe and other top Government officials were part of the delegation.
The Governor cut the tape to officially signal the completion of the project and its availability for the use of the people.
These people will forever remember this Governor. This one is special and very dear to their hearts.
To God indeed be the glory.
