ABIA STATE UNIVERSAL BASIC EDUCATION BOARD (ASUBEB) Organised a 3 day Abia 9-Year Basic School Systems Thinking and Remodelling workshop for all primary school Head Teachers.
Speaking on the occassion, The wife of the executive governor Abia state, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu, who was the Special guest of honour, said, It is her pleasure to be in the occasion to declare open the 3-day workshop aimed at improving the delivery of qualitative education in our state.
She strongly noted that the essence of the gathering was to share knowledge and ideas about how to position our basic education system to give Abia Children the best offering.
She also pointed out that the feat of offering the best educational services to Abia Children is made possible because the state Governor showed astute leadership by constituting a committee on the de-articulation of schools.
In her words, “over the past few years, our education friendly governor took very deliberate steps to upgrading our school system. These steps which include among others, the construction of new classroom buildings, provision of school furniture and construction of fences around schools to protect our children”.
In addition, the school feeding programme, and a revamping of the personnel in public schools have led to an increase in school enrolment in recent times.
As a result of these positive developments in our education sector, Abia State has for the past three years taken the lead in the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations. Saying that all these successes must be attributed to the commitment of stakeholders in the education sector including the ministry of Education, ASUBEB, and the Schoolteachers.
Speaking further, she said, “It is against this backdrop that I commend the management of ASUBEB led by Elder J. O. Anonaba, for setting up this workshop. I believe that this move will in no small measure prepare the leadership of our basic schools for repositioning the junior secondary school system and therefore, sustain Abia’s position in the top ranks of education in the country, adding that such workshop will be arranged for the junior secondary school principals so that they can benefit”.
She furthermore called on stakeholders and regulators in our education sector to begin to apply stringent measures while supervising schools within the State, especially the private schools, and urged them to provide recreation or sports facilities for the students which will affect positively the physical and mental development of our children in the future.
She went ahead to stress that ICT is the way of the future, that greater infusion of Information and Communication Technology into our schools system should be seen.
Emphasizing that Societies that can offer digital solutions to its challenges are the ones leading the world.
Praying that at the end of this workshop qualitative decisions will be taken that will guide policies and create blueprints on how the Board will implement the new 9 year Basic Education System in the state.
The Acting Chairman, Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), in his speech said that The Abia School Free Meal programme promoted by the Abia First lady, Mrs NKECHI Ikpeazu in the 840 schools has raised the cumulative school enrollment from 141,000 and now targeting 580,000 pupils.
He thanked the Governor, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, PhD and his Deputy, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, for this sense of purpose greatly manifested in the education system within these few years.
