Abia Power Sector

Abia State is one of the economic drivers of the country as it has one of the largest markets in sub-Saharan Africa. An essential component that enables these businesses thrive is Power supply.

Proactively on February 26, 2024, the Abia state government in partnership with Geometric Power Limited commissioned the 188MW Geometric Power Plant and APL Electric Company Ltd to energize 9 out of 17 L.G.A in the Aba Ring Fenced Area.

In the Ariaria International Market, Aba, Abia State,  Nigeria, the 9.5 megawatts (MW) Ariaria IPPP is licensed to provide a dedicated, reliable electricity supply to the market. It consists of a gas-fired power plant and a distribution network designed to power shops in the market .

Abia State Government is in discussions with EEDC on a collaboration to improve power infrastructure to energize the remaining 8 local government areas. Inline with EA 2023, ABSG has passed into law the Abia Electricity Law and has gone ahead to set up Abia State Electricity Regulation Authority (ASERA).

Several initiatives are ongoing to use clean and renewable energy sources to increase energy access to unserved and underserved locations in the state. The  state’s Mini grid regulation is also ready.
