A SPEECH DELIVERED BY HIS EXCELLENCY, CHIEF T. A. ORJI (OCHENDO), GOVERNOR ABIA STATE, ON THE OCCASION OF THE OFFICIAL COMMISSIONING OF THE NEW CORPORATE HEAD OFFICE OF THE BROADCASTING CORPORATION OF ABIA STATE (BCA), HOLDING ON THE 6TH DAY OF FEBRUARY, 2014
PROTOCOLS
DISTINGUISHED LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!
I am very pleased to be here today to commission one of our legacy projects, which has become our trademark in laying a sustainable foundation for the development of our State. We have adopted this approach to developing Abia State in response to the weak and often non-existent institutions of democracy and good governance, which our Administration inherited from our predecessors. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
We are under pressure and in a hurry to catch up and provide the key institutions necessary to build this State and make a difference. The commissioning of this magnificent Head Office of the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State, with its 48 spacious and fully and equipped offices, is one of our eloquent testimonies to show that our Administration is not only making a difference but living up to its billings for posterity in this State and the Nation.
Soon after the creation of Abia State in 1991, the then Military Government of the State saw the need to create an organ that can pursue the objectives of information dissemination, public education and public entertainment. For this purpose, a radio and television station – ‘Born to Lead’ was created in November, 1992 as the Broadcasting Station of Abia State, with its Radio FM 88 and TV Channel on 47 UHF Band, using analogue equipment.
The Station performed very creditably under its many able Administrators and committed work force, but it also came under the pressure of growing obsolete equipment, over-crowded offices and other aging assets, which certainly affected its overall performance. This was the situation our Administration met on the ground when we came to office. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
We resolved to make a difference and restore this laudable voice of Abita so that it can once more perform its objectives of informing, educating and entertaining – and through that showcase and promote our State. That difference is very clear today!
We are very proud today that we have taken BCA to another height, and the new modern Head Office we commission here will remain a worthy legacy of change in the face of this Corporation. From this vantage office BCA will begin to deliver a modernized version of digitalized radio and television news services to Abians and beyond. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Beyond providing this beautiful edifice to reduce the office accommodation of workers, we have also enhanced the environment of BCA. We have equally provided modern digitalized equipment to replace the obsolete analogue versions previously used here. Today the Station has achieved the first platform of digitalized equipment for improved news casting, recording and wider reach beyond the shores of Abia State. I am proud to say that today; a wider audience and its programs richer in many ways that fully achieve its objectives can better access BCA Radio FM and TV Networks.
We are changing the face of BCA because we believe that information disseminating Institutions such as this, are cardinal institutions for acceleration of the democratization process. We found many other democracy building institutions in the State – as very weak, and sometimes non-existent, when we assumed office and governance of Abia State. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
That is why we have gone beyond the restoration of BCA infrastructures, to commence from scratch to laying the foundation for all the institutions that support democracy in our State, including the first Abia State Government House, the first Ultra Modern Conference Centre, the first Abia State Workers’ Secretariat, the first Abia State Modern Court Complexes, and other forms of neglected institutions that amplify our democracy.
Our Administration will not relent in moving Abia State to the next level of sustainable development in all sectors, so that other successor Administrations will not experience the problems we did, but will find ready platforms to build from in making Abia State greater.
I expect the work force of our BCA to gain strength from the efforts that our Administration has committed in rebuilding this Corporation, so that your commitments, loyalty and professionalism will be enhanced to better serve our people and the Nation.
I thank everyone that made the event of today a successful one, especially the Director General of BCA, his able team and the entire staff.                                             Â
 May God bless you!
 Thank you.
