Broadcast Of His Excellency Chief Dr. Theodore A.Orji The Executive Governor Of Abia State At The Polio Eradication Sensitization Campaign In Umuahia On Friday 19TH August 2011.
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) is an action to which the Nigerian nation is committed because she is one of the only 4 nations still transmitting the polio virus. This is why the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has left no stone unturned towards Polio Eradication in Nigeria.
The situation where children under 5 years are paralyzed due to the polio virus is unacceptable to Abia state/ especially since this situation can be prevented with only 2 drops of the polio vaccine.
It is in line with this disposition that my Government is decidedly geared towards polio eradication and to keep this exercise on the front burner through this quarterly Polio Eradication Sensitization Campaigns. It is my desire to make all Abians aware of this disease and ensure that all hands are Joined to eradicate it.
This laudable strategy aims at saving the lives of the under 5 children and thus will contribute to the reduction of under five mortality rates thus contributing to the achievement of Millennium Development Goals to which my Government is committed.
I therefore call on all parents, caregivers and all traditional Rulers, Church Leaders, community Leaders, men and women to be involved in ensuring that all children 0-5 years are given 2 drops of OPV and other Routine Immunization antigens according to the schedule in the Health Centres.
This is the only way we can eradicate polio and other childhood killer disease from Abia state and Nigeria at large.
