The Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) is committed to providing inclusive, equitable, and high-quality basic education to every child in Abia State. Established in 2004, ASUBEB oversees the management of primary, nomadic, and junior secondary schools, ensuring effective governance, teacher development, and infrastructural growth. Through strategic partnerships and innovative practices, we aim to build a solid foundation for lifelong learning and community engagement. Our mission is to empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an ever-evolving world.

Our Services
Our Mandate
The Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) is mandated to ensure the effective management of basic education across primary, nomadic, and junior secondary schools in Abia State. We are responsible for the recruitment, appointment, and development of teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as the implementation of educational policies, curriculum standards, and infrastructure projects. Our mandate is to create an enabling environment that fosters quality education and lifelong learning for all children.

Secured Counterpart Funding to Access UBEC Funds (2019-2024)
Successfully secured 2020- 2024 Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) funds. The funds as specified by UBEC will be channelled toward various school improvement interventions.
Infrastructure Needs Assessments
Conducted across the 17 LGEAs to establish baselines on the state of school infrastructure, informing subsequent infrastructure-based interventions.
Staff Verification and On-the-Spot Checks
In line with government directives, the Board carried out extensive staff verification exercise. The results of the exercise is implemented as part of the State wide Civil Service Reforms. Routine on the spot school visits introduced by the Board have improved regularity and punctuality of teaching and non-teaching staff reducing tardiness.
Development of the State Medium Term Basic Education Strategic Plan (SMTBESP) 2024-2027:
The SMTBESP outlines the priorities of the board and will guide resource allocation and implementation.
Conducted First-Ever Diagnostic Survey and Assessment of Basic Education in the State (State Funded):
The Assessment is part of the critical steps required to gather baseline information that will inform the implementation of holistic interventions after several years of neglect. Across the 17 LGAs, 108 facilitators conducted the assessment in 85 schools. The assessors were drawn from the Universities, Colleges of Education, Ministry of Education, SUBEB, and the LGEAs in Abia State. Assessors observed lessons, interviewed Headteachers, Teachers, School Based Management Committees and assessed learners from primary 2-4. Learners were assessed in English language, Igbo language, and Mathematics.
